Helen Mirren portrayed as Queen Elizabeth IIThe nominations for the 79th Academy Awards (known as the Oscars) were announced today, with the ceremony taking place on 25th February.

The British have fared well with Dame Judi Dench, Dame Helen Mirren and Kate Winslet being nominated for leading actress, against Penelope Cruz and Merryl Streep.
