The Beautiful SouthOne of the UK’s most popular music groups have announced their split, bring down the curtain on 19 years of The Beautiful South. While The Beautiful South have always been very popular, selling some 15 million records worldwide, many believe that the group, led by ex-Housemartin member’s Paul Heaton and Dave Hemingway, never actually received the acclaim which they deserved.

With a reputed one in eight UK homes owning a Beautiful South record, it is not hard to see how popular they have been. A string of hits from, “A Little Time” to “Song For Whoever” has seen the gifted band of musicians reach the pinnacle of the UK music charts. While the make-up of the band has often changed, with three leading female singers through the years, the style and popularity has never waned.

While the band have been fairly quiet of late, there were no rumours or speculation of the split, which has come as a shock to their many fans. They joined the music industry 19 years ago with a smile and a laugh, and left today with a rather humorous statement – just two sentences.

“The Beautiful South have split up due to musical similarities. The band would like to thank everyone for their 19 wonderful years in music.”

What more can you say?

In an industry where fun and laughter are in short supply, the group brought a freshness and smiling approach to their music and Beautiful South will be sadly missed.
