One time movie superstar Wesley Snipes has been released on bail of $1 million, after facing charges of tax fraud. It is alleged that between 1999 and 2004, Mr Snipes claimed fraudulent tax rebates of some $12 million.
Snipes has been bailed to appear back in court next month, and cleared to return to Africa where he is currently finishing a movie project. The 44 year old star of action movies such as Blade has seen a dramatic fall in his career over recent years, and his days as a movie superstar are long gone. Without a major movie to his name for some years, the actor has been forced to take on B movie projects, which has had a major impact on his own personal wealth.
While Snipes has pleaded not guilty to the charges, he faces a possible 16 year imprisonment if found guilty. The court case is set to go ahead early next year.
